Culture and Language

Having been established as a geographically poignant trading post in the early 1800s, Singapore quickly attracted immigrants from many other parts of the world. These people brought with them their traditions, languages and festivals, weaving together a cosmopolitan fabric that remains intact amongst the high rise buildings and modern infrastructure of Singapore today. Singapore has adopted four official languages – Chinese, English, Tamil and Malay, elements of each being heard in the everyday use of Singlish by many in the local population. English is accepted as the main language of business and instruction at schools with all children encouraged to study their ‘mother tongue' to maintain heritage and cultural roots.
